Following the enactment of transformative federal criminal justice reform legislation, the First Step Act, Congress and states have the green light to continue -- or, in many cases, start -- down this path. By bringing the tough-on-crime mentality in alignment with smart-on-crime approaches, state and federal justice systems can enhance public safety and fairness by reducing crime while simultaneously reducing prison populations nationwide.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) made some news on Wednesday when she sent a letter to President Donald Trump urging a postponement of the State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress on January 29. Although she stopped short of disinviting him, Speaker Pelosi cited security concerns related to the government shutdown as the reason.

President Trump is upset with the…let’s call them, 'happenings' at the Fed. While his opinions on interest rates have changed over the past two years, his opinion of their infamous lack of oversight has remained constant since he endorsed the idea on his 2016 campaign.

President Trump is looking to leverage his new trade deal, the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), by threatening to withdraw unilaterally from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). He says this will give Congress the choice between accepting the USMCA, or returning to the pre-NAFTA framework which, he said, worked very well.

When historians speak glowingly about the grandeur of the Greeks and of a desire to emulate them, it is more than likely they are talking about Ancient Greece. However, a quick look at the U.S. government’s current leadership, and it would seem they are trying to emulate the Greeks of the last decade, who faced a sovereign debt crisis that crippled their economy. They are heavily resistant to any spending reductions and are running up massive deficits that will eventually circle around to hurt us in the future.
