FreedomWorks is proud to announce that our bill of the month for November 2019 is H.Res. 620, a resolution to expel Nancy Pelosi from the House of Representatives, offered by Rep. Ralph Abraham (R-La.). This resolution would remove House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) as the representative for the 12th Congressional District of California and would vacate the Office of the Speaker.
The movement towards reforming our prison system to lower crime rates and reduce recidivism is helping to shed additional light on absurd occupational licensing laws around the country.
Coming off a week-long recess and without any significant legislative victories this year, the pressure is on the Senate this week to pass the FY 2018 budget resolution, S.Con.Res. 25, which provides reconciliation instructions for fundamental tax reform. The House passed its own version of the FY 2018 budget, H.Con.Res. 71, on October 5 by a vote of 219 to 206.
FreedomWorks today voiced strong opposition to a change to the rules of the House of Representatives proposed by Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.). The proposed rule change would dissolve the privileged status of the “motion to vacate the chair,” by which an individual member could make the motion from the floor and force a vote to vacate the office of the Speaker of the House, and require a majority of a party’s conference to introduce the motion.
On Tuesday, the House is scheduled to consider H.R. 1567, the Global Food Security Act of 2015. The bill authorizes $1 billion for President Obama “to coordinate the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategy to accomplish the objectives of promoting global food security, resilience, and nutrition consistent with national food security investment plans.”
Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) has committed to a more open process for considering legislation on the floor of the House of Representatives. As a result, lawmakers have been told that more of their amendments to legislation under consideration by the House will be debated and voted on. This is a welcome development. However, the Speaker and his leadership team must commit to keep conservative amendments that pass the House in the final version of legislation negotiated with the Senate. Otherwise, a more open amendment process in the House will be an exercise in messaging and distraction.
On June 2nd, the House of Representatives Committee on oversight and Government Reform began a hearing on the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The hearing spanned two days and was aided by three panels of witnesses. In effort to ensure transparency, the congressmen assessed how government agencies currently view FOIA and deal with requests for information. My takeaway? FOIA is a joke and government agencies are the worst.
Washington, DC- With Republican control of the House and Senate in 2015, FreedomWorks believes the coming legislative cycle is too important of an opportunity to waste with visionless leadership.
