Doug Deason is a successful businessman from Dallas, Texas, whose life could have turned out much differently. When he was 17, Deason, who was raised in a wealthy family, and his friends raided a liquor cabinet at a neighbor's home. He was arrested, plead to a misdemeanor criminal trespassing charge, and sentenced to probation.

The federal government and many state governments have slowly been moving away from mandatory minimum sentence for nonviolent offenders. Many of these reforms have been tremendously helpful. But more reforms are necessary to keep big government out of the courtroom.

Mandatory minimums are not a conservative approach to criminal justice

The United States' criminal justice system is so terribly broken that it resembles "socialism with restrained mobility," says one House Republican, and it's imperative that Congress act now to begin to address the skyrocketing costs of incarceration.
