One Vote Away from Class Action Lawsuit Reform

On Wednesday, the Senate failed to end the filibuster on S. 1751, The Class Action Fairness Act, failed on a vote of 59 to 39. Despite the setback, we remain optimistic that class action reform will be able to pass the Senate this year. Senate leadership is expressing that sentiment as well. A version of this bill has already passed the House, and President Bush is a major supporter. So we’re only one vote away from handing the trial lawyers a major defeat!

The next step is thanking our champions – Senators Hatch, Grassley, Kohl and Carper. In addition, we should thank those Democrats and Independents who supported us in the face of extremely negative pressure from their leadership – Senators Lincoln, Bayh, Miller, Ben Nelson, Lieberman, Feinstein and Jeffords.

And, no matter what, we’ll keep fighting to hold another vote this year.
