CSE Urges NO Vote on S. 139, the Climate Stewardship Act

Dear Senator:

On behalf of the 280,000 members of Citizens for a Sound Economy (CSE), I urge you to vote no on S. 139 the “Climate Stewardship Act of 2003,” which seeks to implement caps on energy similar to those in the controversial Kyoto Protocol on global warming. This legislation ignores the lack of scientific consensus on this issue in favor of restrictions on energy consumption that will impose significant costs on the U.S. economy. The theory of climate change is far from settled, and there is not a consensus in the scientific community on the issue. Scientists such as Sallie Baliunas, for example, attribute the Earth’s warming and cooling throughout its history to changes in solar activity and note that 20th century temperatures are not excessive when put into historical perspective. What is certain is that Lieberman-McCain and other Kyoto-style regulations would be catastrophic to our economy. The Energy Information Agency estimated that the Climate Stewardship could reduce the size of the economy by $106 billion, with economic output and personal income both reduced by the legislation.
CSE will count this as a KEY VOTE to be reported to our members in your state. This KEY VOTE will be used to determine your eligibility for our Jefferson Award, to be presented at the conclusion of the 108th Congress. This award is provided to those legislators that espouse the CSE principles of limited government, lower taxes and more freedom.

Sincerely,

Paul Beckner,
President and CEO
