Key Vote YES on Sen. DeMint’s Budget Motion on Socialized Medicine

Dear Senator,

On behalf of hundreds of thousands of FreedomWorks members nationwide, including many in your state, I want to thank you again for your support of Sen. Jim DeMint’s (R-S.C.) successful Health Care Freedom amendment to the budget on April 2, and urge you to now vote “Yes” on his motion to instruct conferees on the Budget Resolution to include a similar point of order in the conference report.  This motion preserves the amendment already passed by the Senate and adds language that would protect individuals from being shifted from private insurance to government insurance.

This motion, and the amendment it preserves, reinforces the mandate voters gave to President Obama who has consistently reassured the American public, “If you’ve got health care already, and probably the majority of you do, then you can keep your plan.” It also builds on his popular promise that we will be able to “keep” our choice of doctor, noting that, “No government bureaucrat will second-guess decisions about your care.”

Importantly, the motion, like the passed amendment, would ensure a much-needed serious debate on reforming health care in America.  There is broad bipartisan agreement that we need to improve the health care market, or lack thereof, in America.  The debate is over how to do so.  This is one of the most important debates of our time.  Sen. DeMint’s motion would ensure that the U.S. Senate would prove once again that it is the world’s greatest deliberative body.  With the traditional 60 vote requirement secured by this motion, the Senate would have to hold meaningful debate on this critical issue, rather than use parliamentary gimmicks to force through sweeping changes with only narrow partisan support, against bipartisan opposition.

On behalf of our FreedomWorks activists, I again urge you to vote “Yes” on Sen. DeMint’s budget motion on socialized medicine and will count your vote as a KEY VOTE when calculating the FreedomWorks Economic Freedom Scorecard for 2009.  The FreedomWorks Economic Freedom Scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the Jefferson Award, which recognizes members of Congress with voting records that support economic freedom.

Sincerely,

Matt Kibbe
