Letter to Senate: Cosponsor Sen. Lee’s Balanced Budget Amendment

Dear Senator,

FreedomWorks is a leading grassroots organization with over one million members fighting for lower taxes, less government and more freedom. I am writing today to offer our support for Sen. Mike Lee’s (R-UT) Balanced Budget Amendment which would require Congress to balance the federal budget every year. It would limit spending to 18 percent of Gross Domestic Product and require that any effort to raise taxes would need a two-thirds majority vote in both chambers.

Our current level of spending is unsustainable. Congressional spending consumes approximately 25 percent of our Gross Domestic Product. The Congressional Budget Office released a report projecting that the federal deficit will reach a record $1.5 trillion this fiscal year. We are clearly at a tipping point. It is urgent that we rein in excess federal spending for the sake of our future prosperity.

The American people have to balance their budgets. Congress should also have to live within its means. Especially during the current economic recession, this is no time to raise taxes on any American. The Balanced Budget Amendment would likely prevent harmful tax hikes by requiring a super majority to raise taxes.

This is a step in the right direction to restore fiscal sanity to Washington. In the November elections, the American people voiced concern over our current bloated federal spending levels. By cosponsoring the Balanced Budget Amendment, it will show your constituents that you are committed to balancing the federal budget. We will score your cosponsorship of Sen. Lee’s balanced budget amendment when calculating the FreedomWorks Economic Freedom Scorecard of 2011. The Economic Freedom Scorecard is used to determine the eligibility of the Jefferson Award, which recognizes members of Congress with voting records that support economic freedom.

Sincerely,
