Congress Passes Tax Relief Package

On May 26, 2001, the United States Congress approved the House and Senate compromise version of President Bush’s tax relief package. The president is expected to sign the bill into law the week of June 5.

CSE president Paul Beckner issued the following statement regarding this monumental achievement:

“Finally, meaningful tax relief for working Americans is a reality.

“On May 26, the United States Congress assured working Americans of meaningful tax relief as a compromise version of the president’s tax relief package was passed.

“This comprehensive tax relief package includes the first broad based reduction in income taxes in 20 years, a doubling of the child tax credit, a lessening of the marriage penalty, and the elimination of the death tax. These changes will help working Americans and their families, small businesses, and our economy.

“We achieved this monumental goal of tax relief for working Americans in part because of the hard work of the tens of thousands of CSE activists who fought from the very beginning for the tax relief they deserve. Taking the lead on this, CSE activists across the country persuaded not only their congressmen and senators to vote for the president’s tax relief proposal, they also encouraged their state legislators to pass resolutions urging their state’s Congressional delegation to support the president’s tax relief plan.

“We wish to thank President Bush and those in Congress who had the courage to stand up for working Americans and demand meaningful tax relief on their behalf.”
