September Freedom Artist: Sharon C. McGovern

Our September Featured Artist for Liberatchik is Sharon McGovern. Her work reminds us of the beauty in simplicity and the technical merits of study and honing a technique. Though her work is not political, it is expressive of our mission at Liberatchik to promote traditional art forms and themes that do not seek to tear down our culture. Sharon’s drawings are a shining beacon in the fog of modernism’s efforts at relativist deconstruction of beauty, society, and the individual. We are proud to call her one of our own.

Please take a few moments to appreciate and share her work via liberatchik.com.

Artist’s Statement

I love art. I love the way a line can become a face, a brush stoke a feather, a scribble an expression of emotion. I’m grateful for the loneliness and compulsion that nudged me toward creation. And I’m gratified when a piece works out (that is to say, it doesn’t mortify me after a year or so).

While my work isn’t overtly political, I am glad to be affiliated with Liberatchik. I appreciate its mission to promote artists who do not exemplify the stereotypes of the art scene. The uniformity of the non-conformist crowd can be as stifling as the suburbs they decry, and even more cramped. The reminder that art and creation is available in some form to any who care to take part is a wonderful gift. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to work at my craft, and aspire to become the Mary Cassatt of Pet Portraiture (or the John Singer Sargent of just about anything).

An article of faith from my upbringing includes the assertion, “If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.” I hope also to create these things, and if others are willing, to share them.

Thank you—

Sharon C. McGovern
