Key Vote YES on S.J. Res. 28, to Reduce Government Waste

As one of our over 5.7 million FreedomWorks activists nationwide, I urge you to contact your senators and ask them to vote YES on S.J. Res.28, a resolution that would repeal the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s catfish inspection rule.

Sens. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), John McCain (R-Ariz.), and Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) are using the Congressional Review Act to repeal the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Catfish Program. With an annual budget of over $14.4 million, the USDA Catfish Program is a costly example of regulatory overreach and overlapping regulatory authority. The program has been identified ten times by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) as an unnecessary use of government bureaucracy.

The program was developed to assess the risks associated with catfish consumption. Catfish inspections, originally a responsibility of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), are now regulated by the USDA. Repealing this program would reduce overlap of regulatory agencies and cut down on regulatory overreach while saving taxpayers millions of dollars. The Congressional Review Act allows Congress to overrule unnecessary, expensive government regulations.

Please contact your senators and ask that they vote YES on S.J. Res. 28 to repeal the USDA catfish program under the Congressional Review Act. FreedomWorks will count the vote on this bill as a Key Vote when calculating our Congressional Scorecard for 2016. The scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the FreedomFighter Award, which recognizes Members of Congress who consistently vote to support economic freedom and individual liberty.

Sincerely,
