FreedomWorks Statement in Response to Xavier Becerra’s Confirmation as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to the Senate’s confirmation of Xavier Becerra as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Adam Brandon, FreedomWorks President, commented:

“Becerra’s confirmation is not just a mistake, but a frightening look at what is to come for big government devastation of healthcare. No doubt, with Becerra now head of the HHS, Biden’s administration and Democrats are feeling emboldened to move even further to the left on healthcare policy.

“To say we are discouraged by his confirmation is an understatement. Seeing that HHS is tasked with ‘improving the health, safety, and well-being of America,’ it’s indefensible that certain senators would vote to confirm someone without healthcare qualifications.

“In addition to lacking relevant experience that would recommend him to such a powerful position, Becerra has voiced radical stances on healthcare in the past. What specifically comes to mind is his litigation in favor of the unconstitutional individual mandate argued in California V. Texas and Texas V. California as well as his support for socialist-style Medicare for All.”

Despite the confirmation, we applaud the efforts of our activists, whom we can always count on to hold government leaders accountable. Since he was nominated to serve as the secretary of HHS, more than 18,000 of our activists have driven action in opposition to Becerra. They have made over 2,000 phone calls to the Senate, racking up more than 34 hours spent on the phone with these offices.
