FreedomWorks Statement in Response to the Reconciliation Package’s Inclusion of Tax Credits for Journalists

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to Democrats including $50,000 refundable annual tax credits for journalists in their partisan, $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation package, Adam Brandon, President of FreedomWorks, commented:

“Is this Democrats’ plan to make amends with the field of journalism after their falling-out in the past few weeks? The socialist spending spree that is the Democrats’ budget plan contains a litany of bad policy, but the tax credit for journalists is certainly one of its more ridiculous provisions. A tax credit like this one is not only unnecessary, but it further complicates the tax code when in truth rates should be cut across the board. But, of course, that would mean elected officials wouldn’t be able to secure carve outs for their friends.

“Government tax cuts, as always, should help hard-working Americans–they should not be used as a tool to garner the goodwill and political allegiance of members of the media. Unfortunately, as we have seen throughout this administration, President Biden and fellow Democrats allow the media to dictate policy, even if it means ignoring much more pressing issues.”

FreedomWorks Policy Assistant Kilian Laverty authored an explanation on the journalist tax credits, which can be found here.
