Republicans Must Use Reconciliation to Repeal ObamaCare

With solid control of both the House and the Senate, one of the clearest mandates delivered to the Republicans in Congress was to repeal the onerous takeover of health care known as ObamaCare. This year, the new Congress has the greatest opportunity yet to fulfill that mandate – by using the budget process known as reconciliation. As millions of Americans are forced to pay a fine for not buying health insurance, and with millions more still struggling with high premiums and deductibles, there is no reason why Republicans should not use a tactic that can place a full repeal of the so-called “Affordable Care Act” upon the president’s desk.

Conservatives Remind Boehner They Can't Be Ignored

John Boehner may have secured his third term as Speaker of the House, but he can’t be too pleased with how much effort it took. Boehner’s supporters are acting like there was never a chance he’d fail to secure the necessary votes, but their projections of confidence appeared tinged with an edge of panic, as the Speaker personally called a number of on-the-fence Members yesterday seeking assurances of their vote.

Replacing Speaker Boehner: Here's How It's Done

December’s disgraceful CRomnibus debacle fresh in mind, House conservatives may finally be ready to hand the most powerful gavel in the House from John Boehner to a more principled leader when they vote for Speaker of the House on January 6th. Replacing Boehner is both possible and necessary for a multitude of reasons, but it’s important to understand how the vote works in order to counter the misinformation that has already started coming from those with a vested interest in keeping the status quo.

New Year, New Congress: Possibilities for (Good) Policy in 2015

Another year is upon us, and with it a new Congress under new-ish management. Although the dude who ultimately signs the bills isn’t going to put his autograph on many of the good things that a Republican Congress may pass, there is still plenty that the new Congress can accomplish next year.

Once Again, the Establishment Cries Foul Over a Stand for Principle

The "CRomnibus" government funding bill passed handily last weekend, but not before Senators Lee and Cruz had their say. In a controversial move, the two senators managed to put their colleagues on record voting for or against funding President Obama's latest unconstitutional executive power grab. Many Republican senators, however, protest too much, claiming that Lee and Cruz may have allowed the Democrats to pass a number of executive nominees because of their insistence upon making their point.

The (CR)Omnibus Process Has Been Another Congressional Disgrace

Congress, apparently in a race to more thoroughly deserve its abysmal approval ratings, has conducted a tremendous exercise in bad government this past week. The omnibus funding bill that is set to keep the government paid for through September 2015 has been crafted largely in secret, and once again left lawmakers with only a couple of days to sort through what had been changed in over a thousand pages of text. This is not a rational way to run a government.

TRIA - Congress to Renew Another Built-in Government Bailout

Corporations are very good at finding ways to get the government to pass their risks on to consumers. The Ex-Im Bank, government green energy subsidies, and Dodd-Frank's "too-big-to-fail" provisions are all ways that you the taxpayer are left holding the bill for private companies who take on risks that the market does not support. Congress is about to renew yet another of these expiring corporate welfare programs this week - TRIA, the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act.
