Taking Back Control from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board

Over 101 years after the ratification of the 18th Amendment that prohibited “the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors,” and ushered in the era of Prohibition -- the largest failed experiment in government paternalism in American history -- it might be difficult to see the continued impact that this period has had on our country. One need only not look hard to see that America’s love affair with alcohol is as alive and well today as it was during the time of the bootleggers. Some places like New Orleans are so far removed from Prohibition that open containers on city streets are all but encouraged and a parched traveler can stop for a Drive-Thru Daiquiri and continue on down the highway.

Take a Step Back from the Moving Forward Framework

Although the costs of inaction on infrastructure will continue to mount, it is essential that Congress present smart, fiscally responsible solutions. Unfortunately for the American people, the recent proposal put forward by House Democrats dubbed the “Moving Forward Framework” is neither smart nor fiscally responsible. In the words of Reason’s Christian Britschgi, the plan from House Democrats is “heavy on funding ideas, but light on funding sources.”

FreedomWorks’ Bill of the Month for January 2020: Know Debt Resolution, H.Res. 686

FreedomWorks is proud to announce that our bill of the month for January 2020 is the Know Debt Resolution, H.Res. 686, introduced by Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas). The Know Debt Resolution would require the Clerk of the House of Representatives to place a real-time display of the national debt -- otherwise known as a debt clock -- in the main hearing rooms of both the House Appropriations Committee and the House Budget Committee.

To Give the Devil the Benefit of the Law

At the conclusion of his opening statement regarding impeachment before the House Judiciary Committee on December 4th, Professor Jonathan Turley mentioned a famous scene from the 1966 film A Man for All Seasons. In this particular scene, Sir Thomas More -- the venerated English lawyer and statesman who famously opposed the tyranny of King Henry VIII -- is criticized by his son-in-law, William Roper, for putting the law before morality and “God’s law.” In a brilliant retort, More asks Roper if he would “cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil?” Roper responds that he would “cut down every law in England to do that!”

New Polls Show the Danger of Banning E-Cigs

As debate surrounding the use and marketing of e-cigarettes and vapes has swirled around Washington for the past few months, one of the most important voices has, buy-in-large, been entirely ignored. The moderately sized group of protesters that rallied outside of the White House on November 9th to protest President Trump’s proposed ban on e-cigarettes went all but unmentioned in the mainstream media. Their signs were simple and to-the-point: “We Vape. We Vote.” And vote they will.

Rent Seeking in Space Travel: How Boeing Extorted the American Taxpayer

Ever since President John Kennedy stepped up to the podium at Rice University in 1962 and challenged America to do the impossible, we have been enamored with space. Seven years later, America had landed men on the moon and established supremacy in the Space Race. The year 1981 saw the first flight of the Space Shuttle Columbia, ferrying crew and cargo on numerous important missions. In 1998, we saw the blossoming of international relations in space with the launch of the first segment of the International Space Station (ISS).
