Created in 2003 as part of the Medicare Modernization Act, Part D of Medicare was designed to provide financial aid for prescription medication purchases of Medicare beneficiaries. As of 2018, 43 million people receive prescription drug coverage under Part D; 58% of those are on a stand-alone prescription drug plan, as opposed to the Medicare Advantage plans that provide supplementary coverage. Though is is open to all Americans who receive Part A and/or Part B benefits, Part D is an entirely optional program.

Earlier this year, a recently retired Minnesota man by the name of Rob Undersander and his wife applied for federal benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps. After a three-week waiting period, Undersander was astonished to find that he had been granted federal benefits totalling $278 per month. After donating his benefits to charity, Undersander contacted his Congressmen in order to tell them about his peculiar situation.

FreedomWorks is proud to honor Rep. Michael Cloud (R-Texas) as our member of the month for August 2019. Representing Texas’ 27th Congressional District, which encompasses much of the Gulf Coast in southern Texas, Rep. Cloud has proven to be a strong ally for liberty. Rep. Cloud is one of only fourteen House members who currently hold a 100 percent on FreedomWorks’ Congressional Scorecard thus far in 2019, demonstrating that he is dedicated to fighting for the people of the Texas 27th and is beyond worthy of our recognition.

FreedomWorks’ activist-chosen dumpster fires of the month for July 2019 are the Student Debt Cancellation Act, H.R. 3448, introduced by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and the College for All Act, S. 1947, introduced by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). Both of these pieces of legislation would seek to erase all federal student loan debt and completely restructure the higher education system, forcing unwitting taxpayers to foot the $2.2 trillion bill.
