Faces of the American Freedom Initiative's Administrative Abuse Project: Michael Whited

FreedomWorks recently announced the launch of the American Freedom Initiative (AFI), a collaboration headed by former acting U.S. Attorney General Matt Whitaker. This project aims to help relieve injustices committed against Americans under the criminal justice system and the regulatory state. As part of this project, we will shine a spotlight on some of the individuals the AFI has identified under its Administrative Abuse Project that have been the victims of federal regulatory overreach.

Liquor Stores Are Essential, But Not For The Reasons You Think

While many states like New York and Texas have been hard at work attempting to aid restaurants and other small businesses by taking such deregulatory measures as allowing the delivery of alcohol, Pennsylvania has decided to go in the opposite direction. Instead of expanding operations of liquor stores, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) -- the three-member panel with total control over Pennsylvania’s state-controlled liquor industry -- has closed all the liquor stores in Pennsylvania.

Beware Coronavirus Cronyism

The passage of Phase III of the COVID-19 stimulus package has reopened the floodgates of federal spending. The nearly $2 trillion package covers everything from essential immediate assistance for small businesses to a $50 billion bailout for the airline industry. All told, the package will more than double the deficit overnight, and the impact on the debt will be enormous. What’s worse is that many on Capitol Hill are already preparing for Phase IV.

The Nation’s Fiscal Health Once Again Lost in the Noise

Amidst the pressing need for congressional action on Coronavirus and the expiring provisions of the USA FREEDOM Act, an important report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) seems to have been lost in the noise. The statements of Comptroller General Gene L. Dodaro before the Senate Budget Committee presented a damning view of the nation’s fiscal health. Over the course of the hour-long hearing, Dodaro painted a bleak picture of our “unsustainable long-term fiscal path.”

Lessons from the Texians

This week marks the 184th anniversary of the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Unfortunately, although it remains an event of massive importance to my home state, the events that transpired at Washington-on-the-Brazos during the Convention of 1836 have largely gone ignored by the rest of the country. This is unfortunate, for there are many important lessons about governance and liberty that can be learned from the Texas Revolution.

We're Back in the USSR

During a recent interview with Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes, Democratic frontrunner Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) once again showed his true colors when asked about his vocal support for Cuban despot Fidel Castro. “It’s unfair to simply say everything is bad,” Sanders said. “When Fidel Castro came into office, you know what he did? He had a massive literacy program. Is that a bad thing? Even though Fidel Castro did it?”
