The myths surrounding the First Step Act continue to emerge, most frequently from Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), the bill’s most outspoken critic. The First Step Act, S. 3649, which was carefully drafted by a bipartisan group of lawmakers in Congress, is supported by President Trump, over 150 former federal prosecutors, multiple law enforcement agencies, a wide base of faith leaders, and conservative policy groups both in Washington and across the country.
Within a few days of Congress returning from recess, House Republicans are once again undermining the document that conservatives promise time and time again to uphold -- the Constitution. This latest move comes despite the GOP losing control of the House just over a week ago for its leadership continually failing to uphold a number of conservative promises to the American people.
Following the midterm elections, returning members of Congress and newly-elected members alike turn their focus to serving in the 116th Congress. Protecting the interests of their voters and of their constituents more broadly is central to doing so. This includes protecting their constituents’ wallets and ensuring effective and honest use of their federal tax dollars.
FreedomWorks is proud to announce that our bill of the month for November 2018 is the resolution for the Article One Restoration Act, H.Res. 330, sponsored by Rep. Warren Davidson (R-Ohio). The resolution, which is cosponsored by such freedom fighters as Reps. Gary Palmer (R-Ala.) and Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.), would direct House Committees to review laws within their jurisdiction to eliminate executive branch overreach in applying these laws. This type of congressional oversight of the executive is much needed.
Recently, there have been several complaints from leftists about the Senate, particularly since the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to serve as an associate justice on the Supreme Court. They complain that the Senate is undemocratic and should have proportional representation like the House of Representatives.
As the 2018 midterm elections approach, voters in all 50 states will cast their ballots for members of Congress and many will cast their ballots for senators. Some ballots will also include measures independent of the national elections. These are, for example, gubernatorial races, as well as ballot initiatives to amend state constitutions.
FreedomWorks is proud to honor Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) as the member of the month for October 2018. He serves in the House of Representatives for North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District, located in the southwest corner of the state.
The stalemate in the Senate on prison reform may finally break in coming weeks thanks to the persistence of conservative leaders — but the work is not yet done. The FIRST STEP Act passed the House more thanthree months ago by an overwhelming bipartisan margin. Since then, it has been stalled in the Senate.
