The Regulatory Landscape in America - A Morass Of Red Tape Designed To Create A Command Economy

Yesterday, I reported on the volume of regulations headed our way in 2013 that rivals Darth Vader's Galactic Empire for sheer size, as well as oppressiveness. Today, The Heritage Foundation is out with its Top 10 Regulations of 2012:

2012 Year In Review

Every year since college, my best friend Dan and I have submitted our best observations on a wide range of topics that reflect on the year that has just expired. We follow the well established template of The McLaughlin Group program. Here are my reflections on 2012.

School Choice; Just a Click Away

My daughter spoke Finnish on Christmas Eve.I thought my nine-year-old had just made up some Swedish Chef-style gibberish until she provided a detailed translation. And a few of her phrases sounded a lot like my older Finnish relatives talking. As it turned out, my daughter had discovered Google Translate. She converted a few English sentences to the obscure Nordic language, clicked the “listen” button, and practiced the paragraph repeatedly until she had it memorized.

No Office Calls

Very soon, only 1 in 3 physicians will be independent. The rest will work for hospitals, insurance companies, and increasingly, Accountable Care Organizations. The trend is a result of perverse incentives in the medical market that make it difficult or impossible for doctors to operate outside of a corporate practice.Rather than alleviating this trend, so that doctors can focus on treating their patients, Obamacare exacerbates the problem.

A Fiscal Cliff Deal Appears Unlikely; What's Next?

As we approach the inevitability of the fiscal cliff, taxpayers are understandably concerned. What surprises await for personal and business taxes and regulations in 2013?First, the new taxes. Personal income taxes will be going up for everyone. As reported today by The Right Scoop,

On the Veneration of Politicians

It's the end of the year 2012 and we Americans have found ourselves in a country vastly different from the America intended. The independent, self-made spirit that lead us to sovereignty and put us in the books as the only country founded on an idea, is now one of a grossly intrusive government. We have moved from a Declaration of Independence, absolving loyalty to any tyrannical ruler who dared dictate our rights and privileges to a culture of dependence that holds in high regard the very state we once found deplorable.

A Tale Of Two Corporations

Two weeks ago, the Oregon legislature was called into special session by Governor Kitzhaber to consider a bill that would allow the Governor exclusive rights to unilaterally negotiate future tax terms with any corporation considering expansion in the state. This bill was being considered in a rush because Nike reportedly was being courted for a large expansion in other states.

Plan B Was a Failure From the Start

Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) has been playing a bad messaging strategy, one that raises tactics above principle, conflating the fortunes of the Speaker with that of his party and his party with the broader conservative movement. The Speaker asked House conservatives to vote for an unpassable bill they didn't want in order to show President Obama's intransigence. Whether it had passed or not, that message would not have been received, but another would have: conservatives would have voted for a tax increase after having campaigned against doing so. Had it gotten to President Obama's desk, he would have vetoed it, but the blame would still have been put on Republicans.
