The RNC Diagnosis: Part 3 - Friends, Finance and Primaries

In developing the Growth and Opportunity Project's Autopsy of the 2012 election (pdf), the Republican National Committee correctly identified the reason for the party's loss, but failed to recommend a coherent strategy to reverse it.The report endorses primaries, campaign finance reform, and recommends various ways outside groups can get involved. Some of it's good, some of it's not so good, but in the end it's a half measure where a radical change is needed.

The RNC Diagnosis: Part 2 - Get Out The Vote

In developing the Growth and Opportunity Project's Autopsy of the 2012 election (pdf), the Republican National Committee correctly identified the reason for the party's loss, but failed to recommend a coherent strategy to reverse it. President Obama won by defining his opponent in a negative way, and marrying modern technology with old-fashioned boots on the ground. Republicans can do those things even better than he did, but doing so will require radically reforming the party.

The RNC Diagnosis: Part 1 - Messaging

The Republican National Committee's Growth and Opportunity Project post-mortem of the 2012 election cycle covers a lot of ground in its effort to diagnose the Party's losses. This first installment of my response covers the report broadly and particularly its prescriptions for messaging.

To Win, We Must First Admit That We Lost

Excusing defeat is a sure way to keep losing. In the 2012 election, conservatives, libertarians, and tea party groups were outworked and outvoted by an array of forces that should have been demoralized and bitter, but instead focused on their common enemy and working together. If we want to avoid a repeat of that performance in 2014 and 2016, we must first recognize one reality: We lost.

How You Can Save Your Country

Government goes to those who show up, right?  We've learned that we can't go to sleep and expect our nation to survive. Those with a penchant to support overbearing government programs to solve every societal ill never rest. Those of us who want to rein in government spending and fight for individual liberty cannot rest either. To limit government and keep it honest, we can't start at the top. We have to start at the bottom, at the most local level, where the trouble  often starts. The best place to start saving the country is right where you are. Local government controls much of what you and your family does on a daily basis.  Whether it's water rights, local taxes, street signage or the curriculum being taught in your schools, you should have a voice and be involved.  Find your passion and get busy. There are some activities that are easy to start doing that can produce immediate results, and give you a great sense of accomplishment along the way.

Black History Month: Do We Still Need It In Its Current Form?

Whenever Black History Month comes around, I experience mixed feelings stemming from its celebration in the Department of Defense schools that I attended during my childhood.  It was always a time of shame and mockery mixed with defiant force for us. We weren't permitted to sit it out, we were commanded to celebrate, which took a lot of the fun out of it.  I always wondered why the history of black people had to be confined to a single month instead of being inside the history books along with the rest.

Colin Powell No Longer Represents the Republican Party

In comments of late, Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, a decorated military veteran with impeccable credentials, has shown a proclivity for adopting an adversarial stance towards the GOP.   As one of the most prominent figures in the party over the past two decades through his military service and cabinet positions, Powell has always had a decidedly positive imprint on the reputation of the GOP with his name constantly rising as a possible presidential contender.
