Congress Can Reclaim Legislative Powers Through the Regulatory Budget Act

Following the introduction of the Regulatory Budget Act by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Rep. Mark Walker (R-N.C.), FreedomWorks Director of Government Relations Neil Siefring commented:

“The regulatory state is squeezing out the middle class, harming small businesses, and costing the American taxpayer real money. Sen. Mike Lee and his Senate colleagues, Sen. Mark Rubio and Sen. Mike Enzi, and Rep. Mark Walker and his House colleagues, Rep. Dave Brat, Rep. Jeb Hensarling, Rep. Mia Love, Rep. Barry Loudermilk, and Rep. John Ratcliffe have taken action to rein in the regulatory state.”

“Today, they introduced legislation that would help restore the central role of the legislative branch in our government by having Congress vote on regulatory costs annually. The bill would help highlight the massive costs of the regulatory state, estimated to be at almost $2 trillion in compliance costs, which amounts to a de facto tax on the American people. This legislation needs to become law to help combat the regulatory state, hopefully resulting in its reduction and eventual elimination. Congress needs to reclaim its constitutional role as the lawmaking branch of the federal government and take back its powers from progressive regulators who are working around Congress. It can do that by passing the Regulatory Budget Act.”
