Press Release

Governor Bush to make strong pitch for Tort Reform

    01/14/2000

New Hampshire CSE activists continue to show up to make their voices heard. CSE Members know that trial lawyers are robbing decent, honest Americans of their money, trust, freedom and peace of mind.

NH CSE Director Rich Killion had the opportunity to question Governor George W Bush about Robert Reich, the former Clinton Gore Labor Secretary, views that the Administration is doing “an end-run around the Democratic process” by pursuing lawsuits against tobacco and gun manufacturers.

I’m a tort reformer…we can’t have the federal government doing this…it has to be changed…you know, after the first couple of primaries I’m going to come out with a proposal to address these issues…you’re going to like it….”

Killion: “Governor, in reference to Robert Reich’s article in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal, the former Labor Secretary was critical of the Clinton/Gore administration on how they have teamed up with trial lawyers to recklessly sue private parties and force huge settlements that advance the goal of bigger government and line trial lawyers pockets. Governor, I’m curious of your thoughts on trial lawyers are now using the government’s lawsuits as opportunities to file class action suits in state courts.”

Governor Bush: I know what your talking about….your referring to all the cases against tobacco, guns and stuff like that….well, you know that I’m a tort reformer…we can’t have the federal government doing this…it has to be changed…you know, after the first couple of primaries I’m going to come out with a proposal to address these issues…you’re going to like it….”
