Personal Freedom and Prosperity 104: Taxes Diminish Personal Power

“That the power to tax involves the power to destroy; that the power to destroy may defeat and render useless the power to create….” - Chief Justice John Marshall

Internet Tax Freedom Forever Act

Governments – Federal, State and local – are always on the hunt for more revenue, and most government systems within America have considered taxing access to the Internet. Fortunately, since 1998, our Federal government has passed a temporary prohibition, which expires at the end of this month.

The Internet Tax Freedom Forever Act would permanently protect the Internet from an access tax. Recently, our House passed similar legislation. The Senate is showing strong, bipartisan support for the bill with half of the Senate signed on as cosponsors. Plus, Majority Leader McConnell (R-KY) and Sen. Wyden (D-OR), the minority leader of finance, are co-sponsors. These very powerful Senators have the votes to pass S.431 the Internet Tax Freedom Forever Act.

As Chief Justice John Marshall wrote in 1819, “That the power to tax involves the power to destroy; that the power to destroy may defeat and render useless the power to create….” Now is the time to forever remove the thought of restricting the Internet and the free flow of information that is wonderfully expanding knowledge and commerce.
