Key Vote YES on Cruz Amendment to Delay ObamaCare

Dear FreedomWorks member,

As one of our millions of FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to contact your U.S. Senators and urge them to vote YES on Senator Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) amendment to delay the funding of ObamaCare.

Senator Cruz’s amendment will be offered to the Senate consideration of H.R. 933, the bill containing the Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the federal government.  At a time when the government is continuing to rack up debt through nearly-trillion dollar annual deficits, implementing the President’s “Affordable Care Act” will be, ironically, unaffordable. A 2013 report by the Senate Budget Committee estimates that installing and operating ObamaCare will cost nearly $2.6 trillion over its first ten years alone.

In addition, ObamaCare will further strain our economy by massively increasing the cost of health care.  In particular, according to a study by the House Energy & Commerce Committee, many young adults will see their premiums rise by well over 100%.  At a time when America desperately needs economic growth and its resulting job creation, the full introduction of ObamaCare will suck resources out of individuals’ pocketbooks and the economy at large.

All the economic impacts, of course, are in addition to the fact that the individual and employer mandates contained in ObamaCare are flagrant violations of our liberty – the government forcing us to buy a product that we may not even want.

In sum, as Senator Cruz observes, at the very minimum “[ObamaCare] should not be implemented at time when our economy is struggling so mightily, at a time when its implementation could push us into a full recession.” Thus, the Cruz amendment delays the funding for implementing ObamaCare until America’s economy returns to historical average levels of growth.

While the ultimate goal is to repeal ObamaCare entirely and replace it with free-market, patient-centered health care reforms (Senator Cruz has introduced a bill for full repeal as well), this amendment will at least buy our battered economy some breathing room.

If this amendment were to pass, as FreedomWorks VP of Public Policy Dean Clancy notes, “Even if the president were to veto the bill [H.R. 933], he would be forced to negotiate with Congress – forced to choose between continued implementation of ObamaCare or a partial government shutdown.” Thus, the Cruz amendment to delay ObamaCare’s implementation should be a top priority for any Senator who believes in fiscal responsibility and individual liberty.

I urge you to call your U.S. Senators and ask them to vote YES on the Cruz amendment to delay ObamaCare. We will count the vote on this amendment as a KEY VOTE when calculating the FreedomWorks Economic Freedom Scorecard for 2013. The Economic Freedom Scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the FreedomFighter Award, which recognizes Members of Congress with voting records that support economic freedom.

Sincerely,

Matt Kibbe
