Over 500 Mitchell County CSE Activists Protest Against the County Commissioners Tax Increase

Bakerville – Mitchell County CSE Club gathered over 500 local residents at a local high school on Saturday, June 9, to protest against the county commissioners who are threatening to raise property taxes against the will of the citizens. To counter the County Commissioners, the residents are taking action by gathering petition signatures and getting a strong message out to the community and to the County Commissioners that they will not take excessive taxation lying down. On those petitions they are pledging not to pay their property tax until January 2, 2002, putting fiscal strains on the County’s coffers.

One of the 500 activists sign up to protest against a tax increase.

Attending the event was CSE counselor and former director of the Office of Management and Budget under Ronald Reagan, Jim Miller, who stressed the importance of taxpayers staying informed and making their voices heard in governmental affairs.

Also speaking on behalf of the national CSE organization was Chuck Fuller, Vice President of Public Affairs, who reminded the Mitchell County residents that it is about time that the people take back the government. He told the crowd, “Your participation can work and will work if you stay united. Government officials can get removed and think they can do stuff to us instead of for us.”

NC CSE members enjoy the educational materials and novelties.

“I am amazed at the support North Carolina CSE received from the people of Mitchell County,” said North Carolina CSE Grassroots Manager Allen Page. “The enthusiasm for our message of lower taxes and less government has spread like wild fire.” Allen Page signed in over 300 new members for NC CSE at the event.

News of the event made front page of the local Mitchell News-Journal and a local TV station covered the event. Mitchell County is a growing hot bed of anti-tax protest in North Carolina and Mitchell County CSE is at the forefront of the movement.
