Senate hearing highlights the movement toward justice reform

Shortly before adjourning for the August work period, the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee held a hearing in which members began a review the United States' justice system and heard testimony from witnesses about the problems facing the federal prison system. The hearing was billed as the first of many to take a look at these issues.

Congress is closer than ever to enacting justice reform

The House of Representatives has already adjourned for the August recess. The Senate is expected to finish up its business this week before members leave Washington. The recess will not be a quiet one for members. They are gearing up for several tricky legislative initiatives and battles when they return in September, among which will be justice reform.

Congress must address out of control spending at the Federal Bureau of Prisons

The Federal Bureau of Prisons is coming under some scrutiny from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.). The two Kentucky Republicans recently introduced the Federal Prisons Accountability Act, S. 1784, which would require the president to appoint the director of the agency and subject the nominee to Senate confirmation under Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution.

Successful conservative reforms could be coming to the federal prison system

Political pundits and the media like to tell Americans that there's no hope of President Barack Obama and Republican-controlled Congress getting anything done. They're too far apart on almost everything, the talking heads say. This is certainly true on some big issues, but there are other areas emerging for which there is broad support on Capitol Hill and in the White House. Among these is criminal justice reform.
