If You Build the Blockchain, Regulators Will Come

The hardest part of drafting any new regulation is establishing a definition. In fact, most of the policy work is in the definition and there are alarmingly few policy considerations after something is defined as a covered entity. The definition of cryptocurrency has already proved problematic for regulators. Essentially, to commodities regulators, virtual currency is a commodity. For bank regulators, it is a bank. For securities regulators, it is a security. For those who regulate money transmitters, it is a money transmitter. For the purpose of property taxes, it is a property. Everyone wants a stake in the new world of virtual currency.

Senate to Finally Vote on Auditing the Fed

On Tuesday, Sen. Rand Paul will finally secure a Senate vote on his perennially authored bill to audit the Federal Reserve Bank of the United States. This is a bill that has been offered by Paul, and by his father Ron Paul before him, every year since 2009, but this will be the first time the Senate has actually voted on it.

Bernanke-Panky: A Review of the Former Fed Chairman’s The Courage to Act

Ben Bernanke’s new memoir, The Courage to Act, begins straightaway with a false premise. The first sentence of the book reads: “In all crises, there are those who act and those who fear to act.” The statement presupposes that action must always be good, and inaction must always be the result of fear.

Janet Yellen: I'll Make Sure Audit the Fed Never Happens

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) didn’t waste any time in introducing a bill to Audit the Fed. Yesterday, the first day of the 114th Congress, Massie introduced H.R. 24, the Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2015 with 64 bipartisan original cosponsors. The legislation is identical to the Audit the Fed bill that overwhelmingly passed the House of Representatives last year (333-92)—but ultimately Harry Reid refused to bring it to the Senate floor.

Will We Finally Get a Vote on Audit in the Fed in the Senate?

Last week, Republicans won control over the Senate in the mid-term elections. I’m personally glad that Harry Reid is no longer Senate Majority Leader but I’m still skeptical on whether Republican leadership will be serious about cutting spending. I hope that they prove me wrong.

House Overwhelmingly Passes Audit the Fed. So, Why Won't Harry Reid Bring it to a Vote?

As expected, the House overwhelmingly passed legislation (H.R. 24) to audit the Federal Reserve with a vote of 333-92. This goes to show that bringing transparency to the central bank is a bipartisan issue that transcends party lines. FreedomWorks will be scoring this important vote in our congressional scorecard to hold legislators accountable.
