NAFTA Reform Must Better Protect Intellectual Property

As the Trump administration seeks to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico, a key issue for U.S. trade negotiators is better and more enforceable protections of intellectual property (IP) rights. This must include more legally binding protections of patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, and other engines of invention and creation, which face a growing array of threats in foreign markets, including even our closest North American trade partners.

Steep Tariffs to Come in December

This Christmas, American exporters could be getting something a lot worse than coal in their stockings: a series of steep new tariffs on goods sold in Canada and Mexico. Following a ruling by the World Trade Organization (WTO) that the United States' "country of origin labeling" (COOL) laws unfairly discriminate against our neighbor nations, Canada and Mexico have been authorized to impose new tariffs totaling up to $3 billion on U.S. exports, starting on December 18th of this year.

On Second Thought, Maybe the U.S. Should Be More Like Europe

The Wall Street Journal reports this morning that the European Union and the United States have again chosen different paths regarding free trade, this time with South Korea. However, for once it’s old Europe that wants to boost economic output by lowering barriers. Meanwhile, in the formerly free market U.S., a Congress beholden to Big Labor throws up roadblocks.
