Julie Su was the head of California’s Labor and Workforce Development Agency (LWDA). During her tenure, Californians experienced rampant unemployment fraud and suffered devastating economic consequences from a crusade against independent contractors.

California’s unemployment system was an inexcusable disaster under the watch of Julie Su. More than 11 billion dollars of taxpayer money went to fraudulent unemployment claims, including checks for prisoners on death row. While real Californians were hurting from Governor Gavin Newsom’s failed lockdown policies, criminals took advantage of Julie Su’s mismanaged department.

The role of the Deputy Secretary is similar to that of a Chief Operating Officer. Julie Su’s failure to effectively manage California’s unemployment system is directly counter to the needs of the position for which she is nominated.

The direction that Julie Su would take the Department of Labor is entirely out of step with the needs of American workers. She is a champion of California’s Assembly Bill 5 that narrowed the classification of independent contractors, dealing a massive blow to the rising gig economy. This policy created substantial job loss and is no model that the rest of the United States should follow.

Julie Su’s abysmal record heading the LWDA in California demonstrates that she is the wrong fit for Deputy Secretary of Labor. Her record of mismanagement and broken California policies are not the right direction for our country.
