FreedomWorks Calls for Senate Plan of Action in Lead-up to November Midterms

Washington, DC- FreedomWorks pushes for Senate to take up legislation that advances free markets and limited government in the months leading up to November midterm elections.

Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) recently circulated a survey amongst their Republican colleagues asking which issues to take-up in the near future. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-Ky.) decision to cancel the August recess presents a perfect opportunity for the Senate to address conservative issues that matter most to Americans.

FreedomWorks President Adam Brandon commented:

“Now that August recess is canceled, Senate Republicans need to get serious about which issues they’re going to tackle in the coming months. They need to quit wasting time and focus on making good on their campaign promises.”

“The top priority for Senate Republicans between now and November should, of course, be to continue the momentum from last year’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. This will ensure that everyday Americans get the tax relief they deserve for years to come. Senate Republicans must make the individual and small business tax cuts permanent. They need to have a vote on the floor and force Senate Democrats to put their money where their mouth is about protecting the American middle class.”

“Next, Senate Republicans must deliver on regulatory reform. This includes abolishing the unaccountable Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and passing the REINS Act to ensure transparency from the bloated executive branch.”

“Thanks to their failure last year to repeal Obamacare — a recurring promise for almost a decade — the Senate still needs to fix health care. The employer mandate must be repealed to save small businesses. Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) need expansion. House Freedom Caucus member Rep. Dave Brat (R-Va.) has already put forward a bill to expand HSAs, and it’s time for the Senate to act on Sen. Jeff Flake’s (R-Ariz.) version of this bill.”

“It’s also time to end the federal government’s death grip on our children’s education. The Senate needs to expand education savings accounts for K-12, as well as increase school choice. Parents know best where their kids should go to school, not bureaucrats.”

“The endless cycle of terrible budget deals that cost the American taxpayer millions require serious reform. FreedomWorks calls on Senate Republicans to stop relying on continuing resolutions and rework our flawed budget process.”

“The House has already passed the FIRST STEP Act. The Senate must do the same. Prison reform is not only the right thing to do, it’s fiscally responsible and will lead to safer communities.”

“Finally, welfare reform must be addressed before November. A good start would be taking up the Welfare Reform and Upward Mobility Act and pushing for work requirements for welfare recipients.”

“The American people were clear in the 2016 election. They want real reforms to our broken government and it’s time for Senate Republicans to deliver.”
