FreedomWorks Statement in Response to the EPA Rescinding California’s Waiver to Regulate Auto Emissions

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In response to the EPA's decision to rescind the state of California's waiver to regulate auto emissions as part of the corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards, Adam Brandon, FreedomWorks President, commented:

“The Trump administration's decision to rescind California's CAFE waiver is yet another win for deregulation and free markets. The Tenth Amendment grants states wide flexibility on policy and our republic is better for it. However, what the Tenth Amendment does not do is empower individual states to set policy for the entire nation. The California emissions regulations would impact Americans in other states who have no ability to vote those state legislators out of office. It is regulation without representation at its worst.

“The administration's rollback of stringent fuel economy standards will not only provide automakers much-needed flexibility but will also result in cheaper, safer vehicles for consumers. Allowing the free market to thrive and allowing competition to drive down prices for fuel-efficient vehicles is clearly the best way forward. Setting arbitrary standards is always bad policy and we applaud the EPA's insistence on not allowing partisan fights to prevent them from cutting red tape.”
