Activists in Missouri will have a number of opportunities to learn more about the movement to Stop Common Core at local meetings held around the state by the Missouri Precinct Project. MOPP as it's commonly known in Missouri was created "to educate and motivate conservatives to become more involved in the political process, to register more unregistered citizens and increase voter participation."
MOPP has been very active in the statewide opposition to Common Core in Missouri, holding meetings and coordinating with local bloggers to inform, organize and mobilize parents as well as educators and legislators. The next round of meetings being held are as follows:
CC Presentation Osage Beach Tuesday, Dec 3 at 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM Sweet Springs - CWA Meeting on Common Core Tuesday, Dec 3 at 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM CWA of MO Public presentation on Common Core - Ballard, MO Friday, Dec 6 at 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM CWA on Common Core - Chaffee, MO (change of venue - General Baptist Church) Saturday, Dec 7 at 7:00 PM - 9:00 PMAdditionally there will be another conference on the Missouri State Standards (a name change instituted by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in reaction to the parental backlash against Common Core). This meeting is designed for: school superintendents, school board members, teachers, concerned citizens, parents, grandparents, public and private school teachers, educators, and home-school families...basically everyone. Please feel free to attend and bring a friend who is interested in learning more about Common Core in Missouri.
Finally, there will be a Rally Against Common Core, on February 18th, 2014 in Jefferson City, Missouri. The start time is noon in the rotunda of the capitol building. It's important to attend this meeting as legislators will be in session and will pay attention to a large gathering on an issue that they will be drafting law on.
Remember opposition to Common Core/ Missouri State Standards is based on the following facts:
As an elected school board member, I am intimately acquainted with the desires of parents to have input in the curriculum, management systems and teaching pedagogy used to educate their children. CCSS is the antithesis of this desire and when fully implemented will amount to a massive power grab comparable in its scope only to Obamacare.
These meetings are an excellent opportunity to network and organize in opposition to Missouri State Standards. Grab a carload of activists and attend a meeting! We can only stop the intrusion of the federal government on our rights and local control of public education if we stand strong together. Knowledge is power when combined with targeted activism.
