Another Step for Transparency at EPA

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced yesterday changes they’re making to regulations promulgated under the Clean Air Act. This new reform would ensure that the public would be informed of the costs and benefits of regulations under consideration. In a statement, EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler said, “Today’s proposed action corrects another dishonest accounting method the previous administration used to justify costly, ineffective regulations.”

Support the CBO Show Your Work Act, S. 1746

On behalf of our activist community, I urge you to contact your senators and ask them to support the CBO Show Your Work Act, S. 1746, introduced by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah). The bill would require the Congressional Budget Office to make its models and data available to Congress and the public.

The EPA Is Using Private Emails to Talk to Lobbyists

A recent report from the Daily Caller highlights how the Environmental Protection Agency frequently uses private email accounts to communicate with environmental lobbyists, ducking the transparency and record-keeping requirements that are supposed to bind the agency.

Profiles in Liberty: Dr. Ron Paul

On January 12, the Federal Reserve Transparency Act (S. 2232) is scheduled for a vote in the Senate. Authorizing review by the Governmental Accountability Office of our nation’s monetary policy, the bill was introduced by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.). But the bill’s final vote is arguably due to the legacy of the Senator’s father, former Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.), who championed the causes of sound money and central bank transparency over his 12-term career in Congress. Dr. Paul is the subject of this week’s Profiles in Liberty.

Freedom of (some) Information (for those who can afford it)

On June 2nd, the House of Representatives Committee on oversight and Government Reform began a hearing on the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The hearing spanned two days and was aided by three panels of witnesses. In effort to ensure transparency, the congressmen assessed how government agencies currently view FOIA and deal with requests for information. My takeaway? FOIA is a joke and government agencies are the worst.

Elizabeth Warren is totally fine with being kept in the dark by the Federal Reserve

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) has become the populist darling of the far-left by successfully portraying herself to be a vocal opponent of Wall Street and big financial institutions, as well as a hardcore supporter of onerous financial regulations, the costs of which are passed on to American consumers. Her anti-cronyism image, though, isn't all it's cracked up to be.

The (CR)Omnibus Process Has Been Another Congressional Disgrace

Congress, apparently in a race to more thoroughly deserve its abysmal approval ratings, has conducted a tremendous exercise in bad government this past week. The omnibus funding bill that is set to keep the government paid for through September 2015 has been crafted largely in secret, and once again left lawmakers with only a couple of days to sort through what had been changed in over a thousand pages of text. This is not a rational way to run a government.
