The Solyndra Saga: Part… (uh… we’re losing count): Low Voltage

If you thought the $535 million that the American taxpayer shelled out for the utter failure that was Solyndra was expensive, you may want to sit down for this one.

Crossing the wires this hour is news that the General Motors corporation will be halting production of the Chevrolet Volt electric car and laying off 1,300 employees.

    Volt

The company announced that the layoff and production halt will last at least 5 weeks but is not necessarily permanent; however the dreadful sales numbers of the Volt lead some to believe that this may be the first of many nails in the coffin of this heavily subsidized program.

In 2011, the Volt barely reached 75 percent of projected sales. GM had planned to expand production to 60,000 vehicles in 2012 but so far has only sold a little over 1,500.

This bailout and jobs program thinly veiled as some sort of automotive breakthrough has been incredibly expensive. The base model Volt is listed with and MSRP of $31,645 however when considering state and federal government subsidies the cost per vehicle dwarfs the MSRP. With $2.3 billion coming from the federal government alone, total subsidies are well over $3 billion for the program. This makes the cost of each Volt sold well over $200,000.

Once again the Obama Administration has expanded the deficit funding a program that’s only as green as all the money it has burned through.

Our King said that he'd drive a Volt when he's out of Office (November can't come soon enough!). So, where's he going to buy it - at "Brilliant Biden's Bum Buggies"?

I am not surprised. I tried for over a year to find a dealer in 3 states - no Volts ever showed up except at a dealer in California. Obviously GM never had any intention to actually SELL the car! Also the original Volt that they refused to sell was a much better car! Was this just an Obama PLOY to prove the electric car is a worthless gimmick?

Sure GM intended to sell Volts but the supply was limited because the demand was limited. It still is because it's not American to drive a Volt and save money on gas. But it's good to celebrate the failure of the Volt because it gives hope to the right that there is still a chance that GM could fail too. Very, very small chance but there is hope! And that would be very bad for Obama. For the country, it would be .......... well, .........well who cares if it's bad for Obama.
    gawd bless murica!

I don't think this story is true....It was Bush who started the funding and push for the Volt by supplying GM with incentives. At least that's what this article said: http://blogs.motortrend.com/cars-politics-6057.html

David, what is it with the racial connections consistently...This has nothing to do with race nothing. It has to do with Obama's crazy Ideology and belief system. Yes the economy was having some hard times when this President took over. But, he stated he could turn it around. Maybe we should listened closer. He wasnt going to turn it around with Free-Maret Captialist ideas that provide MAN with individual Freedoms. No, he had a plot to begin increasing the concept of Socialism in this country. Thats right I said it..SOCIALISM. Well, let me tell you Mr. Webb this country was not founded on Socialism or Communism we have a Constition that allows man to be and to pursue happiness. Happiness to me is not paying for other peoples contraceptives, living in a society that is monitored in every way by big government. No do I like living in a country where the government won't tell you there is inflation yet evertime I drive to the Gas station we have another 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 cents added to the price of Gas. Hey, why arent the Democrats attacking Mr. Obama for the price of Gas now like they did to George W. Bush??? Hello?? Can you hear me?

The status quo of Bush ?? What the hell does that mean..Obama has had 3 wars going at once overseas, the Arab Spring which seems to be still in flux. Islamic militants gaining ground in many governments around the world. These are the Facts sir, and it seems to me you dont want to deal with those facts. Obama can do no wrong? Is that correct..How about are hostages in Egypt some Republican some Democrat who will be in Egyptian courts on felony charges..Did you feel for them when the Egyptian government refused to let them leave?

Nobody here is interested in the facts here, Mr. Watson! Haven't you heard? According to some here on this site, Obama should be picking cotton in the fields of Mississippi while the infallible White Man watches over him with a whip.

The truth of the matter -- be it domestic, foreign, or economic policy -- is that Obama has maintained the status quo set the the last Bush Administration. That much anyone can see and the evidence all to obvious to anyone willing to acknowledge its truth!

Good comments Robert, and it would all make a lot of sense if Obama was really holding up development and causing gas prices to rise and energy shortages. But he's not and it's all just playing politics against him to demonize him. I can tell by your comments that you are intelligent enough to search out the real truth if you were interested in doing so.

I’ll be the first to admit that coal, oil and even current nuclear energy is not the ideal way to power this great Country of ours! I’d even go so far as to say that someday wind, solar, geothermal and even ethanol may be viable alternatives. The key word in this last sentence is “SOMEDAY”!
Yes, pristine skies, land and waterways are an absolutely laudable GOAL. But it takes energy NOW to produce the engines of the FUTURE! Starve the businesses and entrepreneurs of today of energy and they’ll not be able to create the engines that will drive that cleaner future.
A creative, prosperous and free economy can do miracles! At the urging (NOT command, regulation or law) of JFK we went from glorified skyrockets to a man on the Moon in only ten years! It is quite easy to envision that a strong economy, aware of the failings of our current energy sources, could do the same to power our cleaner future!
It’s no future I’d want – to admire the pristine environment while standing in the welfare line – or, more likely, starving!

Of course you're right Randy and the price of fossil fuels will continue to go up as it gets harder and more expensive to mine and bring to market. And of course you are pretty well saying that we should just drop all ideas of alternative energy sources. Right Randy?

Well, its not Obama's money..He just says here go taxpayers, pay for this and pay for that!! He is a multi-millionaire now and never really liked America anyway. Quote, "We need change who we are, how we think, our history.." Sorry, this in not my type of President. I believe in the U.S. Constitution and individual Liberty. Not a president who trys to use the power of the Federal Government to place a Death Grip on the First Amendment of our Constitution and silence any real debate.. Obama needs to GO!!

I think you are meaning that you want a tree to fall and kill Obama and Gore but your sentence structure makes it a little confusing. Can you say what you mean in two proper sentences please?

@David Webb, To twist someones analogy of "picking" stocks with "picking" anything from a field and immediately assuming they had to have been refering to cotton, leaves me no doubt as to who the real racist is.

    03/03/2012

    @LootoRacerJ

    WTG? More like WTF!?

"You should be in the fields, your a great picker?" What, exactly, would Obama be picking in a field? Cotton?

That kind of sentence fragment is the kind of ignorant tripe that emboldens everyone else in America -- and the world -- that you and those like you have nothing intelligent to say for the Obama Administrations policies and only a RACISTS vendetta that has blinded you form seeing the age-old reality of politics!

Freemason's tell of "leaving a mark, not a stain." You and those like you are nothing but a stain! Where are the moderators to remove such comments?

If you're thinking of buying stocks then you're not doin too bad Looto. There are millions who don't have enough money to feed their children properly now after Bush2 got finished wrecking the country and the economy.
Say, why not promote Jeb for pres?!!

WTG Obama, you picked another winner to send money to. Please let me know what stocks NOT to buy. You should be in the fields, your a great picker.
